Griffin says he was in the locker room in Iona Monday morning when Johns asked him to go to the design office. The situation worsened when Griffin replied that he would study with his guardian later in the day, which would have caused a physical confrontation between the two.

Following a hearing at the school Tuesday, Iona suspended Griffin until May 2020, ending his career in college basketball. It is not known if Johns had to face a discipline for his role in the altercation.

The Gaels have just participated in three consecutive NCAA tournament tournaments in which they have not passed the first round. Prior to her dismissal, Griffin was named to the second pre-season team of the All-MAAC team, while Iona was chosen to finish third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic conference.
Griffin averaged 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Gaels last season.
