DULUTH, Minnesota – Strong winds swept the large waves along the shores of Lake Superior, flooding a business district and causing power outages.

The National Weather Service reported that 64 mph winds were reported Wednesday in Duluth Harbor. Gale force winds create waves of up to 14 to 18 feet. The Canal Park business district near the lake was flooded and the city closed Canal Park Drive until further notice. City officials urged residents to stay away from the shores of the lake.

The strong wind neutralized about 1,700 Minnesota Power customers in the Duluth area on Wednesday morning.

The meteorological service issued a flood warning on the shores of the lake until 4 pm. Wednesday for Duluth and Superior and Ashland in Wisconsin.

Elsewhere in northern Minnesota, rain has turned into snow with accumulations of at least 6 inches in early Thursday.
