Two people were transported to a hospital, including a firefighter, after the blast and fire that hit a large building at Heather Gardens, a senior community, on Friday night in Aurora.

Aurora Fire Rescue and several departments in other jurisdictions reacted shortly before 18 hours. to a building on East Linvale Place, according to Lt. Laure Bridges. They encountered a fire involving a gas pipe in a part of the community that houses single-family homes for people aged 55 and over, she said.

According to Bridges, a person was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries, as well as a firefighter whose health condition was described as stable.

Firefighters continued to light the fire at 7:35 pm, looking for spot lights and making sure the fire did not come back on. At 9:30 am, firefighters reported that the fire was under control.

Some parts of Heather Gardens were evacuated for safety, partly because of the nature of the fire, with the community clubhouse turned into an evacuation center. The Red Cross is on hand to help.

The gas service has been shut down, according to Bridges.

Although there was an explosion, it is unclear if it was the cause of the fire, she said.
