A student was shot dead Monday morning at a high school in North Carolina, pushing parents to come down to campus to find their children.
A student was taken into custody after the shooting took place at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina, about 20 km from Charlotte, the Matthews police department said.
Authorities said the shooting was "an isolated incident" and the scene was secured by the police.
The identity of the victim was not revealed but the police declared that he was a boy.
State Superintendent Mark Johnson said he was "sorry to hear that we lost a student because of violence at school."
"We have contacted the Charlotte – Mecklenburg authorities and will give all our help, but we are thinking first of all about the parents and other relatives of the deceased student," Johnson said. "The safety of our students is paramount – it's a sad day for all of North Carolina and we need to work together, as a community, to solve these problems."
Classes resumed at Butler High School after a brief lock.
Parents were told that they could pick up their children if they wished, and emotional photos showed them together with the students after the terrifying morning.
Heartbreaking. After finding her mother, this student told us that she always knew it would happen.
She said that shooting in a school was not a question of if but when. @wsoctv pic.twitter.com/mbEc2K3AsQ

Parents here tell me that they are thankful for mobile phones.
If this is the world we live in now, they can at least be in touch with their loved ones.
