NEW YORK – A government study found that 1 in 3 adults in the United States eat fast food on a given day. That's about 85 million people.

This is the first federal study to examine the frequency with which adults eat fast food. An earlier study had revealed that a similar proportion of children and adolescents ate on a given day.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the figures on Wednesday. It is based on a survey of about 10,000 adults over four years.

The study did not find any difference between men and women. However, high-income families ate fast food more often than low-income families and blacks more than other racial or ethnic groups.

Health officials said that too much high-calorie fast food could lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other health problems.
