NEW YORK (AP) – A government study found that 1 in 3 adults in the United States eat fast food every day. It's about 85 million people.

This is the first federal study on how often adults consume fast food. An earlier study had revealed that a similar proportion of children and adolescents ate on a given day.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the figures on Wednesday. It is based on a survey of about 10,000 adults over four years.

The study did not find any difference between men and women. However, high-income families ate fast food more often than low-income families, and blacks more than other racial or ethnic groups.

Health officials said that too much high-calorie fast food could lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other health problems.
