A new study shows that the United States has the highest rate of drug overdose deaths of all developed countries in the same way.
Researchers examined overdose mortality rates among people aged 20 to 34 in 13 countries between 2001 and 2015.
They found that there were more than 63,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2016, which is in line with CDC estimates.
And in 2015, the drug overdose mortality rate among Americans was more than double that of other countries studied, including Australia, Denmark, England, Germany and the United States. 39; Spain.
The study puts the United States "35 overdose deaths per 100,000 men and 20 deaths per 100,000 women this year.
Mexico had the lowest overdose mortality rate among men and women.
One of the authors of the study told the media that the reason that some countries ranked better than others was not entirely clear, but this could be due to the implementation of some programs designed to reduce the risk of overdose. This includes such things as the distribution of naloxone, the availability of heroin treatment centers and the prevalence of the needle exchange program.
Experts point out that the opioid crisis plays a role in the US findings.
