(CNN) The 5-foot-long is Subway's favorite, but soon, the 12-inch signature will not be available at your local store.
CEO Trevor Haynes told USA Today that every franchise owner can now choose the option or not.
The change takes effect this month.
The 5-foot-long had been removed from the menu for years when Subway gave it a second life last winter.
Many franchisees were not happy. Their beef, so to speak, was the price. They complained of the narrow profit margins that accompany the deal.
The chain drives franchise owners to experiment with their own value offerings based on the company's costs.
