Take your cape of real world tensions and your allegories glasses out of the ordinary. Super Girl is back! No time for "precedents"; let's see what happens with the big players of Season 4.
Alex and Brainy: While Alex seems comfortable with his new position as WD Director, Brainy's Brainy-ness Essentials are at a breaking point. Who could have guessed that a level 12 intellect would have trouble operating on Earth in 2018 … other than, you know, Everybody.
Brainy makes an effort by putting on a Winn sweater, Alex admits she's struggling to change, and finally, they agree that their friends are missing them and that they have to start working together . This should be a fun pair of weird couples, especially if Brainy keeps his personal image inductor in place to save us the blue / white hair combo.
Alex, who has adopted a fabulous new hairstyle from day to night, is in love again. I still miss Maggie, but if Alex found a happy place, I'm happy for her.
J'onnThe last wish of his father that I promote peace led him to a support group for the extraterrestrials alarmed by the growing hostility that surrounds them. They struggle to find work and cope with increasing verbal abuse, and many have purchased L-Corp's new imaging inducers that allow them to project a human appearance.
J'onn is calmer, quieter, in the first of this character, almost as if David Harewood modified his performance by relying on the soft tones that Carl Lumbly had brought to the role of Myr'nn last season. It's a fascinating change and hopefully that will hold.
Lena and James: L-Corp may be making a mint by selling image inducers to extraterrestrials who want to assimilate, but James and Lena's happiness is marred by the threat of lawsuits for James's actions as Vigilante. Although he does not want Lena pulling the strings for him, she urges her mother to play chess in her prison cell until Lillian gives up compromising information about her former associates.
Lena then exploits this information with the prosecutor, who abandons James' case, provided that he never returns to his vigil. (Oddly, James learns this in a report and not the prosecutor himself.) Lena does not tell him his role in all of this, and if superhero shows have taught us one thing, it's his secrets. never never ever to reveal themselves and continue to ruin relationships. Sooo … no future problems on the horizon for those two, no sir!
Oh, and Lena's good mood with her mother may have been wrong, but her coolness to Supergirl was very real, which means that the fault will continue (to break our hearts) in Season 4.
Kara and Nia: The beginning of season 4 sees Kara flourish and it's exhilarating to see her sunny optimism take full force – especially when we remember the swamp of depression in which she was bogged down at the start of season 3. She throws meteors, stops the wrongs of the artist, saves losses in Kaznia and saves balloons of little girls. She also kills in her reporting work at CatCo, which we saw too little last year.
Even more delicious? She mentors novice journalist Nia Nal (Nicole Maines, an effervescent pioneer herself). Nia is brilliant, serious and extremely nervous when she vomits during her first encounter with Kara, who was once this type of bright, sincere and nervous. And get this: Nia brought Kara a latte exactly the way she likes it, according to Cat Grant's advice.
I will not lie, friends. I had to take a moment with that because … my heart! Cat Grant not only remembers Kara's preference for coffee, but she values Kara / Supergirl enough to share her knowledge with the new employee who will work with her. Calista Flockhart may have been away for seasons, but she still has a long shadow.
Kara immerses herself in mentorship when Nia in turn tries to have a story about the fashion industry in Central City. Hoping that Nia follows Kara's advice to dispel her fear and make waves herself. (Next page: Kara checks her privileges)
