A Texas school superintendent resigned after making a racial comment about former Clemson University quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The Independent School District Board of Onalaska accepted Lynn Redden's letter of resignation after a special meeting was held Saturday morning, said Ashley Maichetti, Executive Assistant to the Office of the Superintendent of Justice. district.
The resignation of Redden will take effect at 11:59 pm Saturday, according to a separation agreement signed by the chairman of the Redden Board of Directors and Onalaska ISD, Ted Wiggins.
The agreement states that Redden thinks "that it will be in his interest" to resign.
The agreement also states that Redden has until September 17 to return all school district equipment, including keys, cell phones, computers and credit cards.
He also received the same time to withdraw all his affairs from the Superintendent's office, in accordance with the agreement reached by The Greenville News.
Redden's job as superintendent of Onalaska has been criticized after posting a comment on the Houston Chronicle's Facebook page stating: "You can not count on a black quarterback" in reference to Deshaun Watson earlier this week .
The school board issued a statement after the comment was made.
"The OISD does not tolerate negative comments or actions towards a race," the statement said. "The District values each individual and the District will take appropriate action to resolve the situation quickly and completely."

In a resignation letter from Redden, he apologized to the school district and Watson for his comment.
"I acknowledge that, having had the opportunity to respond by criticizing or belittling me, he instead chose peace and positivity," Redden said in his letter. "Despite the terrible position I imposed on him, he has proven to be the kind of model I would be proud of for all my students."
Redden leaves 42 years of work in public education, he said in his letter.
"The comments were false and inappropriate and have been a source of embarrassment for the District, my family, my friends and me, and for that I am deeply sorry," he wrote in the letter. "This experience has taught me that I still have a lot to learn."
