A 29-year-old surfer from Atlantic County died as a result of a visit to the wave pool at a resort in central Texas.
Fabrizio Stabile, of Ventnor, was in the pool at BSR Cable Park in Waco prior to his death at Atlantic City Medical Center on September 21, reported Associated Press.
Stabile has been tested positive for Naegleria fowleri – an amoeba that usually occurs in warm fresh water – the day before she dies, according to a GoFundMe page launched by her relatives to create a base for her memory.
When Stabile returned to New Jersey, said the fundraiser, he reported a sudden and severe headache when mowing the lawn.
The situation worsened the next day and when his mother went to watch him, he could not move or speak coherently, and he was taken to a hospital in the area where he was treated for meningitis symptoms. .
Stabile "has been tested for a multitude of diseases caused by various viruses and bacteria, but the results have been negative or inconclusive," says the GoFundMe page.
He was finally tested positive for Naegleria fowleri on Thursday, September 20th, the day before his death.
Stabile's family and friends hope to share the rare amoeba, which destroys brain tissue and has a death rate of over 97%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"By the time Fabrizio was diagnosed, it was too late to administer the drug that had been provided to three of the five known survivors in North America," wrote Stephanie Papastephanou, organizer of the page. "Still, this medication is not easily accessible."
BSR Cable Park closed temporarily on Friday while the CDC was testing for amoeba, AP reported, and the owner of the water park said he would bow to new demands.
Stabile's obituary indicates that he was an "outdoorsman" who loved snowboarding and surfing, and his passion for nature led him to work for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. .
"With great sadness and a heavy heart, we mourn the loss of a collaborator of FAB-ulous," said the shop on Facebook. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Stabile family.
Stabile's family requested donations on their behalf to the Swim Above Water Amoeba Awareness Foundation instead of flowers.
