Surrounded by four walls and wanted by the police at the door, a man nevertheless found a way to escape Saturday in Fairfax County, authorities said.
County police said that the man had managed to escape through the ceiling of a motel room in the 6000 block of the Richmond Expressway.
He "crossed the ceiling and entered the attic," police said in a statement. Then they said that he had gone down and escaped through another part of the building before the officers could surround him.
The fugitive, who was wanted Saturday night, was identified as Alton Thodos, 32 years old.
Saturday night, the technique used by the man to cross the ceiling was not clear. The police described the case as a barricade situation; such events occur frequently in the Washington area, but leaks across the ceilings are rare.
In their report, the police said that when the police went to the motel room, the man inside apparently threatened to hurt himself if they entered.
A woman was in the room with him at the time, the police said. However, they said, she emerged, which allowed the police to enter.
But then, the man crossed the ceiling.
Police said that for a while, it seemed like he was still in the building. The officers of the Special Operations Division tried to use tear gas to get him out, the police said.
But soon after, according to the police, investigators obtained surveillance footage showing that the man had left the building.
It was not known how tear gas could have affected motel operations.
The site is in the Huntington area, less than one kilometer south of Alexandria.
Police described the man with 6 feet 1 and 175 pounds, with a beard.
