The mission of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October has always been focused on a unique message: consciousness. The impetus for this one-month campaign has been for women (and men) to know what is normal for them, to know their family history and to consider the importance of regular breast cancer screening. But last year, Susan G. Komen's local affiliate in northern Jersey decided to take another turn in October; they decided to push the awareness envelope by launching a new Women's well-being Expowhich provided access to free health screenings, informational speakers and local resources.

This year, Komen North Jersey and the County of Passaic Health Department and the Board of Independent Shareholders' Directors are working together to present a larger format that they believe will attract more than 1,000 participants from Passaic County and from the surrounding area. The event, presented as "a women's event with activities for the whole family" will be held on Saturday, September 29eof 10:00 to 4:00:00hat the Passaic Wayne County Technical Institute, New Jersey.

"Our partnership with Komen North Jersey is aimed at providing free access to health screenings and encouraging women and their families to adopt a healthy lifestyle," says Charlene W. Gungil, Health Officer of Passaic County. "We are particularly concerned about the rising incidence of breast cancer among young residents in our riding and we are working to change this trend. We know that many factors can help reduce the risk of breast cancer and other diseases. By working with like-minded organizations like Komen, we can provide better access to information and resources that can help detect these diseases quickly and refer treatment to those who need them. It's about saving lives in our communities.
