LANCASTER, Pennsylvania (WHTM) – A disc jockey who uses the professional handle "DJ Freez" has been arrested in the 25-year-old homicide case of a county school teacher. of Lancaster.
Raymond C. Rowe, 49, was arrested Monday at his home in Lancaster and charged with criminal homicide in the death of Christy Ann Mirack, said Attorney Craig Stedman.
Mirack was 25 years old and was a freshman teacher at Rohrerstown Elementary School when she was found beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted in her home in East Lampeter Township on December 21, 1992.
Stedman said the break in the case came by genetic genealogy, the same technology that led police in California to a suspect in the Golden State Killer cases earlier this year. DNA from the Mirack case was privately downloaded to GEDmatch, a publicly accessible Internet database, which resulted in matches to relatives of Rowe who had voluntarily submitted their DNA.
However, this was not enough for an arrest, so the infiltrated soldiers secretly collected DNA samples of chewing gum and a bottle of water used by Rowe while he was working as a jockey for an event at Smoketown Elementary School.
The DNA was submitted to a criminal laboratory of the Pennsylvania State Police, and tests revealed a correspondence between this DNA and the Mirack case DNA.
The District Attorney stated that Rowe has never been a suspect in the case before the match of DNA. The investigators are not sure if Mirack knew him.
"We are not at a point where we are discussing or speculating on a motive.In considering the time that has elapsed, some specific issues on the ground might never be answered publicly," Stedman said. "I can say, given all the information and evidence – to include the DNA found on the scene – we know that this accused raped and brutally murdered Christy Mirack."
Rowe is being held in Lancaster County Jail without bail. Stedman said prosecutors are likely to seek the death penalty.
