A threatening letter, which according to the author was contaminated with ricin, was sent Monday morning in the afternoon to the residence of Senator Susan Collins in Bangor, Maine, the director of Senator Annie Clark's communications.
The Bangor police responded to the incident around 1:39 pm to investigate the suspicious letter, officials said at a press conference Monday.
The letter was received by Collins' husband, Tom Daffron, according to Clark.
"At the present time, we have no information to suggest that the general public is in danger," said Sgt. Wade Betters of the Bangor Police.
The local fire department and a HAZMAT team from Orono were called to participate in the investigation, Sgt. Betters said.
The Bangor police did not disclose the contents of the letter, but Clark said the author had allegedly contaminating the letter with ricin in a series of tweets posted Monday night.
"The affected areas have now been cleaned up and Senators Collins and Mr. Daffron will be able to stay home tonight," Clark said, adding: "The letter tests, as well as the investigation of its origins , continue. "
