BOSTON (AP) – Noah Syndergaard was still wearing a plastic bib from a local seafood chain when he spoke to reporters after closing the Red Sox on his first appearance at Fenway Park.
For the Mets, it was a feast all around.
Syndergaard threw seven innings of three shots, and New York hit four homers Friday night to cool the Red Sox 8-0 and break Boston's four-game winning streak. The right-hander of the Mets eliminated six players and made three to lead the Mets to a fourth consecutive victory and a sixth win in their last seven games.
"It was just a fun ball game on all fronts," said Syndergaard (12-3). "The offense really came to life. The defense played well behind me. "
The Red Sox, who lead the majors with 101 wins, saw their lead over the New York Yankees in East AL reduced to 9½ games. The only baseball team ever to win a playoff spot, Boston's magic number to claim its third consecutive divisional title, remained at six.
The Mets (69-78) are still technically alive in Eastern Newfoundland, but could be eliminated this weekend despite 25 wins in their last 40 games. Much credit goes to Syndergaard, who has won 10 of his last 12 decisions, and to Jacob deGrom's Cy, who has not awarded more than three points in 26 consecutive starts.
"We're going through highs and lows, but overall, the rotation has been good this season," said manager Mickey Callaway. "It's good that they end up strong."
Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer in the third, Austin Jackson hit a two-point shot in the eighth, and Jeff McNeil and Amed Rosario shot solo for New York. McNeil and Brandon Nimmo took diving in the outfield, and Syndergaard won a run on first base in the third inning to end Boston's only threat.
Ian Kinsler took the second goal and Jackie Bradley Jr. had a double-flight call – the only time the Red Sox reached third base. Andrew Benintendi took second place and Syndergaard barely beat him in the front row.
The Mets starter also eliminated Kinsler, first in the seventh.
"He has good things," said Red Sox striker J.D. Martinez. "He throws hard. He's not just a chuckle. He knows where the ball is going. He puts the ball where he wants it.
Bruce also scored twice in the first game against Red Sox emergency starter William Cuevas, who made his first major league start because Hector Velazquez fell ill. Cuevas (0-1) allowed Michael Conforto and Bruce to double two consecutive doubles, then left after dropping Rosario's first goal in the third period.
Robby Scott hit Conforto with an exit and then dropped out of Bruce's circuit. McNeil went 5-0 in the fourth and Jackson allowed the Green Monster and the billboards above him to give the Mets a 7-0 lead. One subsequently, Rosario also beat the left wall to win 8-0 and continue Tyler Thornburg.
RATS!
The Mets visited their canoe in the fourth inning: a rat that made the players run away. We do not know if it was the same who scared the Red Sox in their dugout on Tuesday night. They paid tribute to their guest with a rat skeleton (presumably fake) on their railing.
FAN SUPPORT
A healthy contingent of Mets fans helped drive the crowd of 37,117 spectators, the 40th annual sales in Boston. They applauded the visiting team's circuits, but both sides seemed united when the crowd broke into two or three "Yankees Suck!"
"It was awesome, just the general mood, the story," said Syndergaard, who visited the Green Monster display board before the game. "It's like throwing in a cathedral."

The Red Sox announced about four hours before the match that Velazquez was sick. Cuevas, who has made 23 Triple-A starts this year but was out of her bulls in her eight appearances in the league, allowed two runs on three hits in two sets and more.
