DAMASCUS, Syria – Preparations for the reopening of a vital border post between Syria and Jordan have been completed, paving the way for its reopening next month, the Syrian news agency reported on Saturday.
Earlier, the agency reported that the Naseeb terminal had reopened and the flow of trucks and transit across the border had begun.
Jordanian government spokeswoman Jumana Ghunaimat denied this information, saying in a statement that the border was not yet open and that the technical committees of both sides were still meeting to discuss logistical, technical and technical issues. infrastructure.
Shortly after, SANA declared that the border post would officially reopen on 10 October.
The reopening of the Naseeb crossing would provide a major relief to the government of President Bashar Assad by restoring an essential gateway for Syrian exports to Arab countries.
The rebels took control of the crossing point in 2015, cutting a lifeline and disrupting a major trade route between Syria and Jordan, Lebanon and the oil-rich Gulf countries.
Syrian troops captured it in July this year after the rebels reached an agreement with Russian mediators to end the violence in the southern province of Daraa and make the crossing.
The fall of Daraa and the resumption of Naseeb marked another victory for the Assad forces and marked the return of his forces to the province where the uprising against him began seven years ago, as a result of successive military victories won in most of the country with the help of powerful allies. Russia and Iran.
The Naseeb Passage is of particular importance as it is an important economic artery for neighboring countries. This is the only outlet that connects them to foreign markets for their agricultural products.
"The opening of the crossing point would have a positive impact on all neighboring countries," said Abdul-Qader Azzous, an adviser to the Syrian government, adding that it would promote trade between Syria and Jordan.
The Syrian Government would also collect transit fees for convoys coming from Jordan. A few days ago, the Syrian Ministry of Transport increased the fees for empty and loaded Syrian, Arab and foreign trailers crossing Syrian territory.
The news site Hala Akhbar, linked to the Jordanian army, said preparations for the reopening of the border post with Syria were still ongoing.
