Tanzania to crack down on homosexuals; ask the public for information

A Tanzanian regional official said the authorities were cracking down on homosexuality as part of a wider campaign against prostitution and immorality.

Paul Makonda, Regional Commissioner for Dar es Salaam, said his public appeal against gays and prostitution rings has been enthusiastically received.

Makonda said the goal was to eliminate prostitution and homosexuality. He said at a press conference on Wednesday that the public had sent the police the names of more than 200 people and announced the names of those who were frequently named. He added that some people had been accused of being homosexual because their walking style was considered "gay".

Tanzania, like many other African countries, has laws that criminalize same-sex relationships.
