A 14-year-old boy from Utah was killed Sunday by a stray bullet fired from shooters several hundred yards away, in an incident that officials described as "involuntary".
Zackary Kempke was in the back seat of her family's car in a remote area of the Monte Cristo mountain range in northeastern Utah. He was shot in the head and died, reported The Deseret News from Utah, citing police.
"My brother-in-law heard an explosion in the back seat and went back and realized that his son was gone," said Cory Hopkins, the boy's uncle, at Fox 13 Salt Lake City.

Dale Stacey, Rich County Sheriff, told the newspaper that the shot was coming from another family targeting a target several hundred meters away. There have been no charges, but an investigation is underway.
"The individual involved, as well as witnesses, said that they did not know that there was a downstream road and that they could not see the vehicle while it was not clear. he was traveling on the road because of thick scrub and trees, "said the sheriff's office.
Hopkins said the family initially felt "some anger about the careless people," the newspaper reported.
"We've all had time to think and you know … this family will live with that for the rest of their lives," said Hopkins, "and I think it's also tragic on this point."
