A 43-year-old surfer, pulled off his surfboard by a great white shark, used the board to fend off a further attack Wednesday morning off Ballina on the north coast of New South Wales in Australia. "He transferred to Lismore Hospital".

SMART drumlines were deployed off Shelly Beach and adjacent beaches early this morning at the time of the incident.

Beaches around the Ballina area are expected to be closed for at least 24 hours after a request from police.

Mr Keogh said the man's injuries were not life threatening.

A Northern NSW Local Health District spokeswoman said the 43-year-old East Ballina man was in a stable condition.

Ballina Mayor David Wright said the surfer described the shark as about 1.5-meters long.

"He said he was trying to hit the shark with board".

Cr Wright said he was unsure if the SMART drumlines were now out in the water.
