DALLAS – Republican titular Ted Cruz and democratic challenger Beto O 'Rourke We agreed to debate three times before the US senatorial elections in November.
In statements released Friday, the two men agreed to debate domestic politics before the Sept. 21 hearing at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and Sept. 30 at the University of Houston. A third debate on domestic and foreign policy issues is scheduled for Oct. 16 in front of an audience of live television studios in San Antonio.
O 'Rourke is a Congressman from El Paso, who is three years old and who gives up his place to challenge Cruz. The Republican was elected for the first time in the Senate in 2012.
Texas has not elected a Democrat to the state office since 1994, but O 'Rourke's campaign has attracted considerable attention at the national level.
According to a CBS Dallas / Dixie Strategies poll, Texas voters were asked who they would vote for if the US Senate election was held today. While Cruz is ahead in the poll with only four points separating him from O'Rourke, the result is a statistical link – within the margin of error of 4.3%. Of all likely voters in Texas surveyed, 46% of respondents said they would vote for Ted Cruz, while 42% said they would vote for O. Rourke.
O 'Rourke hosts a town hall in South Dallas on Friday night, reports CBS Dallas. A crowd of about 1,700 people is expected at the Good Street Baptist Church at 6:00 pm.
Cal Jillson, a professor of political science at SMU, told CBS Dallas Rep that O & # Rourke must take the lead at the beginning of October to have a legitimate chance to win.
"Beto O 'Rourke has had a great race and is at hand," said Jillson. "But he must overtake Cruz by three, four or five points before being safe on election day."
