Ted Koppel, a CBS contributor and former ABC host "Nightline," told Brian Stelter, a CNN correspondent, that his hearings would be "in the bathroom" if Donald Trump was not president.
The case took place Monday at a round table on the "Kalb Report" of the National Press Club on the state of journalism under President Trump.
Stelter, a frequent critic of Trump, said the press was the victim of a "hate movement" led by the president, who regularly lambasted CNN as "false news."
Mr. Koppel stated that CNN would not be anywhere without Mr. Trump.
"He has been great for the industry," said Koppel.
"But what does that mean?" Stelter asked. "If the ratings are up, what does it mean?"
"That means you can not do without Donald Trump," said Koppel. "You would be lost without Donald Trump."
"Ted, you know that's not true," said Stelter.
"CNN's notes would be in the bathroom without Donald Trump," Koppel said.
"You know that's not true, you play for fun," Stelter said. "You have lived enough presidencies to know that there will be more presidents."
Mr. Koppel asked Mr. Stelter how CNN's ratings had changed since Mr. Trump took office. According to the facilitator of "Reliable Sources", "we could maybe reach 20, 30 or 40%". He then insisted that it would be "OK, too" if those numbers went down, which made the rest of the panel and the audience laugh.
"I reject the premise that these networks are making a lot of money from Trump and we are benefiting from it," said Stelter.
Mr. Koppel acknowledged that criticizing CNN in the presence of Mr. Stelter was a "sensitive topic". He pointed out that MSNBC also benefited from all the steps taken by the President.
"Is there a time of day when they do not focus on Donald Trump?" He said to himself.
Stelter then spoke on Twitter, saying that Koppel was oversimplifying the "cyclical" nature of cable news ratings.
I admire Koppel, but I think the cable system is a lot more complex than he lets it appear. Ratings are increasing, ratings are falling. Stories come, stories go. It is important to cover Trump and deal with what will follow. https://t.co/GViF1ffb6p

In my experience, cable news is cyclical in some ways. even without any trump, the Democratic candidate filled with the history of the primary and overcrowded GOP would have matched a sharp rise in 2015/16/17
