SEATTLE (WHDH) – A teenage girl from Washington State underwent brain surgery so that doctors could preserve her musical abilities.
Kira Iaconetti's dreams of a career in musical theater were shattered when doctors discovered a marble-sized tumor on the right temporal lobe, which controls her senses. The 19-year-old has lost her ability to process sound and sing on a key.
"A cruel joke about the discomfort that this would happen where I'm passionate," she said.
Neurosurgeons at Seattle Children's Hospital have developed a plan to test Iaconetti's ability to sing and listen to music in real time under the knife with a procedure called awake craniotomy.
"Our goal is not only to cure the tumor, but also to improve its life," pediatric neurosurgeon Jason Hauptman said.
They say that she felt no pain and that the operation worked well.
Iaconetti plans to return to the scene and perform once recovery is restored.
