Teen on Alaska Airlines flight helps blind and deaf passengers traveling alone, becomes viral

A 15-year-old girl is praised for her hands-on approach of helping a blind and deaf passenger traveling alone on an Alaska Airlines flight last week.

Clara Daly and her mother, Jane, were returning from Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles when their flight was canceled. They were rebooked on another flight, where the pair met Tim Cook, a blind and deaf man traveling home to Portland, Ore.

Cook had visited his sister in Boston.

"I saw a woman sign in the hand of a man, so he could feel his words," said Lynette Scribner, another Alaska Airlines passenger. "After watching them for a few minutes, I realized that the man was deaf and blind."

Scribner once said that Cook boarded the flight, other passengers did their best to make his trip more comfortable – including a man who left Cook in his hallway.

"The man, who had dropped out of his seat, did his best to help with things like opening coffee cream and pouring it into his coffee," Scribner said.

However, the flight attendants needed someone who could communicate with Cook during the flight.

A flight attendant requested through the PA system in the aircraft if passengers knew American Sign Language (ASL) to call their call button.

Daly, who had been studying ASL for a year, called his button.

"I sat with Tim a few times on the flight and towards the end for about 30 minutes," said Daly, Alaska Airlines reported. "He just wanted to talk."

"I went to [Cook] a total of three times, one time to give him some water, another to tell him the time, and the last hour of the flight just to talk to him, "Daly told FOX59.

"We talked about our family in Massachusetts and he asked me about my plans for my future," she said.

Daly inscribed the words in his hand so that he could understand.

The crew was delighted with Daly's actions.

"Clara was amazing," said a flight attendant from Alaska. "You could say that Tim was very excited to have someone to talk to and that she was an angel."

Although they are not the only ones to be surprised by the sweet teenager. Scribner posted a snapshot of the girl who signs with Cook on Facebook, which has already been shared nearly 600,000 times since Sunday afternoon.

Jane told Alaska Airlines that her daughter thought the cancellation of their flight was supposed to be.

"After the flight, Clara told me that she thought it was supposed to be that our original flight was canceled and that we were placed on this flight, so she could to be there to help Tim, "said Jane.

After landing safely, Cook was picked up at the door by a service provider at his senior's facility.

He reportedly told the airline that it was the best flight he had ever taken.
