Teenager accused of murder smiles after stabbing a victim to death: Reports

A 17-year-old girl was smiling and smiling after she stabbed a classmate to death at a Michigan high school, prosecutors said in court Friday, according to ABC Detroit affiliate WXYZ.

Tanaya Lewis was charged with a first-degree murder in the stabbing assault that killed a 16-year-old girl, the Macomb County Attorney's Office told ABC News . She appeared at her loading audience Friday morning by video chat, a photo published by WXYZ.

The dispute apparently involved a boy, Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer told a press conference on Wednesday, adding that the teenagers were friends, but both seemed to have come out of the boy.

Lewis allegedly stabbed the victim twice in the upper chest – once in the heart – after approaching her on Wednesday morning at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, a suburb of Detroit, police said.

The confrontation occurred during a class transition, reported WYXZ. The victim then attempted to escape, but Lewis pursued her and stabbed her in the back, piercing her lung, according to WXYZ.

About 20 to 30 other students and their teacher were in class at the time, said Dwyer. No one else was hurt.

After the teacher pushed him away, Lewis tried to get around the teacher and shouted, "I'm going to kill her," prosecutors said in court on Friday, WXYZ reported. According to witnesses, witnesses told the authorities that she was smiling and laughing after being stabbed.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and died less than an hour later, Dwyer said.

In Michigan, a person is considered an adult in criminal law at age 17.

The student who was apparently the victim of the attack, aged 16 or 17, cooperates with the investigation, said Dwyer.

Dwyer described the suspect and the victim as "straight students" who had never had problems before. The victim was a member of the cross-country team, the robotics club, the color guard, the fanfare, the National Honors Society, and the student council of the school, Dwyer said.

Lewis made "some confessions" when she was taken to the police station for questioning, Dwyer said.

On Friday, Lewis was denied bail and will appear in court later this month, WXYZ reported. She did not plead in court.
