A 16-year-old Michigan high school student died Wednesday after being stabbed during a fight, police said.

The fight took place between two students in a class at Fitzgerald High School, Warren police said. The teenage girl who was stabbed died as a result of her injuries. She was not immediately identified.

A 17-year-old student, whose identity was not released, was arrested during the stabbing attack, FOX 2 Detroit said.

The fight between the two students began around 9:30 am and would have occurred over a boy, but this could not be confirmed immediately, said Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer. The 17-year-old stabbed the victim twice in the chest with a kitchen knife, he added. A school resource officer began giving CPR to the victim until the paramedics arrived.

No other students were injured, Dwyer said.

Warren's police were planning to pursue a murder charge, FOX 2 Detroit said.

The school was locked out early in the fight, said Fitzgerald Public School Superintendent Laurie Fournier in a statement. The school was fired at 10 am.

Warren is located about 15 miles north of Detroit.
