WARREN, Michigan – They were heterosexual students and old friends, police said, but boy's conflict may have led a girl to stab another girl to death in a Warren class Wednesday.

William Dwyer, Warren Police Commissioner, said that a 16-year-old girl, Warren, died Wednesday morning, less than an hour after being stabbed twice in the chest with a steak knife kitchen style. He stated that one teacher and 20 to 30 other students were in the class when the aggression took place.

"I froze, I did not know what to do, I just saw one of my friends who has just died," said 16-year-old Victoria Oraczko of Warren.

She said that she was in the classroom where the assault had occurred and that her backpack was covered with blood.

The suspect, a 17-year-old girl from Warren, was arrested without incident, said Dwyer, and a homicide charge will be sought. Charges could come Thursday from the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

Dwyer refused to disclose the names of the victim, suspect or school resource officer who started CPR on the victim after hearing screams around 8:30.

Dwyer testified that the victim died at approximately 9:25 am at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights. She was, at one point, friend of the suspect, he said. He said that they were both seniors in school.

He stated that the police were informed that the victim was involved in school activities, including cross-country skiing, robotics, color retention, fanfare, student council and promise generation.

"It's really a tragedy. Two lives are ruined, "said Dwyer, adding that the girls were good students and had never had problems before. "It's really a tragedy on both sides."

Dwyer said the suspect was unhappy with the victim because she thought the victim was telling the suspect's 17-year-old boyfriend that the suspect was cheating on him.

Dwyer said that there were texts between the suspect and his boyfriend, but he declined to comment further. He said police received information on Wednesday that the suspect and his boyfriend had gone to school together to resolve their differences on Wednesday morning.

He said that the student cooperates with the police. He said the suspect had made an admission, but that he would not disclose more details.

Dwyer said that a knife, which had been brought to school in a backpack, was recovered.

The high school closed early Wednesday after being closed and will be closed on Thursday.

No one can be immediately reached in the high school or district superintendent's office.

According to an announcement by Superintendent Laurie Fournier on the Fitzgerald Public Schools website, psychologists and counselors will be available to staff and students at the school. School officials also work with the police and review security procedures and the protocol, the statement said.

"Our hearts and prayers are with the student's family and we offer our deepest condolences," said Mr. Fournier in his release.

Lisa Crabtree, from Warren, was waiting Wednesday morning high school for her daughter, Abygail, 13, to be released from his class. Crabtree said that her daughter told her that the police escorted students by class.

"She died of fear there," Crabtree said of her daughter's first year.

Oraczko said that she was at the teacher's office to try to do her homework after being away Tuesday when the attack took place. She said that she was pushed from behind and heard someone screaming: "She will kill me! She will kill me!"

Oraczko said that she thought that someone was playing, but then she saw the suspect with a knife, the victim fell to the ground and a "pool of blood begins to form". She said that the suspect had been taken away by the teacher and that she had seen the victim receive CPR.

Dwyer said his department did not remember having killed in a high school for years.

He said that school safety is "the best we can do". Dwyer, who is also Commissioner of Oakland County, said that he generally advocated for funds to be made available to schools for metal detectors, such as airports, and other security measures. .

He said that at this point, there will be no extra security at the school when it reopens, partly because it was not a random act.

Crabtree said that the school does not have metal detectors, but maybe she would like them to be there. She described the situation Wednesday as "horrible".

"I do not know what to think … it makes me want to study at home," said Crabtree, adding that she wanted her daughter to have a good education and that the school should have good teachers.
