In an unusual case of theft, two teenagers from the Utah countryside stole a small plane on Thursday and were promptly arrested after flying "very low" for about 15 km, police said.

The two men reportedly took the tractor and drove it to a private airstrip before taking off in a single-engine, fixed-wing sport aircraft. Witnesses told police he saw the plane flying very low along US Highway 40, police said.

The teens, aged 14 and 15, had left a group home on the Wasatch Front in northeastern state earlier this week and were living with friends in Jensen, according to a statement posted on Facebook by the office from the sheriff of Uintah County.

The teenagers initially planned to return to the Wasatch Front, but they changed course and went to Vernal Regional Airport, where they were arrested, the Desert News reported. Both are being held at the Split Mountain Youth Detention Center in Vernal.
