NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) – Tennessee is providing resources to help residents who want to quit smoking during the Great American Smokeout.

The annual event is held Nov. 15, but Tennessee's resources are available throughout the year. They include the Tennessee Tobacco QuitLine which offers free tips and information. This line can be reached at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

According to a statement from the Tennessee Department of Health, about 1.5 million Tennesseans smoke cigarettes. And smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disease in the world.

Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits at any age. Obtaining help through counseling increases the chances of successfully quitting.

Services provided via QuitLine from Tennessee are free and confidential. Information is available in Spanish and English.
