NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Tennessee State linebacker Christion Abercrombie collapsed on the sidelines late in the first half against Vanderbilt on Saturday and was in critical condition after an emergency surgery for an injury in the head.
University officials issued a statement Saturday night saying Abercrombie was being watched. The Tigers coach, Rod Reed, went to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center to check the linebacker after the match.
Reed told The Tennessean that he did not know exactly how and when the Atlanta native was injured before he found himself on the sidelines in the second quarter of a 31-27 loss to Vanderbilt.
"He came on the sidelines and collapsed there," said Reed.
Abercrombie received oxygen on the sideline and then took on a stretcher.
The linebacker brought Illinois back in 2016 and played 11 games in 2017 before moving on to the Tennessee State. He entered Saturday's game as the Tigers' second tackle and was credited with five tackles and a quarterback squeezed before suffering the injury.
After the match ended, players from both teams joined Derek Mason, Reed's coach and Vanderbilt, for a prayer for Abercrombie, his family and the Tigers.
"Football is what we do, not who we are," said Mason. "I know what it's like to be a coach.I know what it's like to have a player hurt.In the end, when serious injuries occur, football becomes secondary."
