NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Rescue quarterback Blaine Gabbert took the start and led the Tennessee Titans to a 20-17 win against the Houston Texans in their opening game at home on Sunday.

Marcus Mariota, who injured his elbow last week, was active but did not play.

Gabbert finished 13 of 20 for 117 yards and a touchdown without interceptions.

Mariota was injured in the elbow and lost the feeling of throwing his hand while he was playing a fake game by running a play-option in a defeat Miami Dolphins last week.

Tennessee was hoping Mariota would be able to play, but his status dropped during the week before the match.

After being a full participant on Wednesday, Mariota was listed as a limited participant on Thursday and Friday.

He said that he had felt tingling in his hand and that he was struggling to grab the ball as he wished when he practiced Thursday.

Mariota came out for pre-game warm-ups to make soft passes on the back and tight ends on the seam course. He had a glove on his right hand during warm-ups.

The Titans are cautious with Mariota, especially behind an offensive line without starters Taylor Lewan (concussion) and Dennis Kelly (illness).
