Tesla has officially released the ninth version of its embedded software, which includes a new dashboard feature, Atari games (which can be played in standby mode), enhanced navigation, and much more in what the company calls "putting the most important update to date. " Software Version Version 9.0, as it is called, is now available for download on all Tesla cars. Owners should simply connect their car to a Wi-Fi access point to begin the update.
Tesla's driver assistance system, Autopilot, has not advanced. CEO Elon Musk promised earlier this year that Tesla would begin to unlock more features that, in his opinion, will allow the company's cars to drive by themselves. The first of these features, called Navigate, is now listed as "coming soon" on the company's website. (Musk said on Twitter that the feature needs "still a few weeks of validation. ")
Version 9.0 allows Tesla cars built after August 2017 to run in "dash cam" mode. When this feature is enabled, the car will record and store videos from its front camera with 10-minute clips. The new software update also adds new navigation features, with more detailed instructions, as well as better information on upcoming turns and exits on the highway.
Another new feature of the 9.0 update will also reduce the acceleration available at low speeds when the car detects an obstacle in its path, which, according to Tesla, reduces the risk of accidental driver panic. The screen behind the wheel now shows different types of vehicles, such as bicycles and trucks. It's instead of using a car to represent all the objects detected by the sensors and cameras of the car, as before. Tesla said the external cameras of his eight cars are now active, providing a "360-degree" view that creates "a better understanding of the situation on the road".
As usual, the new software includes Easter eggs, this time in the form of Atari video games. The company does not say which ones are included, nor where people can find them in the software. Games can be played while the car is in the park, using a mix of touch-screen controls and steering wheel. Musk said he hoped to include First place, Missile command, and Storm when he initially tweeted the idea in August.
Finally, model 3 is given a web browser and calendar in version 9.0, and applications of all Tesla cars should be easier to access. Climate controls have also been consolidated.
Tesla announced that cars upgraded to version 9.0 would work under "ghost mode", leaving some of the car's brain claiming that the feature was working to validate the software before it was released. Navigate will then be released as a beta for US customers. Other even more advanced features of Autopilot will be released in the coming months, according to the company.
Tesla says that Navigate is the "most advanced autopilot feature to date."
