Tesla said Friday that the latest version of its vehicle software had begun to be distributed to customers. The automaker's CEO, Elon Musk, had previously said the update would produce "significant" advances for Autopilot, the company's semi-autonomous driver assistance system, although Tesla announced in an article about its website that the autopilot updates will arrive "in the coming months."
Here are the highlights of the new Tesla software update currently available:
- Owners may request software updates with their phones outside the vehicle.
- Owners can send a destination to the navigation system of their car remotely with a mobile phone.
- Vehicles built with equipment made available in August 2017 can record and store videos taken by the front camera of the vehicle.
- The blind spot monitoring function of Tesla now uses cameras, in addition to ultrasonic sensors, and can display vehicles in the owner's blind spot on the touch screen.
- If a vehicle detects an object in its path when driving at low speed, it will automatically reduce its acceleration capability to prevent accidental acceleration.
- Atari 's classic arcade games are now available as Easter eggs hidden on the touch screen when the vehicle is parked.
Tesla also described some of the upcoming features of the autopilot, such as the ability to recommend lane changes, navigate between highways and take out exits with driver supervision. In its current iteration, the autopilot can keep a car in its lane and adjust its speed depending on the surrounding traffic, among other features.
Recent accidents involving this feature have raised questions about whether drivers gave him too much confidence and did not pay attention to the road. Tesla has repeatedly stated that the autopilot was intended for use with a caring driver who had his hands on the wheel, but the most obvious accidents involving the autopilot included reports of distracted drivers.
Consumer Reports released Thursday its ranking of four semi-autonomous driver assistance systems. The publication ranked the autopilot second, behind the Cadillac Super Cruise. The autopilot received the highest rating in terms of capacity, performance and ease of use, but the lowest rating in terms of keeping drivers engaged
