Last month, CEO Elon Musk crowned the Tesla winner among automakers, saying his company was "1st, 2nd and 3rd of August" in a tweet, citing an InsideEVs report .

Tesla shares rose 1.8% Thursday before trading.
CNBC has not independently verified the InsideEV report. The monthly dashboard states that it follows "all sales and deliveries of plug-in EV" in the United States.
Tesla shares fell 18 percent in the last month before Thursday's trading day, as controversy over Musk's tweet about the company's possible privatization and a SEC investigation into the issue unfolds .
