We gave him a A-
Exploding with infectious originality, Riley Boots' Sorry to disturb you may be the weirdest weird film of 2018. It might be a bit unfair to compare the Bay Area rapper-filmmaker to other directors when he's so clearly on a trip, but if you dig surrealism handmade by Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry or the anti-establishment strangeness of Repo Man then this one is undoubtedly for you.
Lakeith Stanfield of Atlanta takes on the role of an Oakland wrestler who calls himself Cassius Green and who takes an entry-level job as a telemarketer to pick up enough money to live in his uncle's garage with his mance-artist girlfriend performance, Detroit (a bright Tessa Thompson). But rather than get stuck in another dead end concert, Cassius immediately jumps to the top of the scale after adopting a "white voice" (courtesy of David Cross) on the phone. Soon, he is crowned "caller of power," mounted on a gold elevator to the company's penthouse, where he approaches the CEO of Backslapping, who wears a sarong (a delusional arm, Armie Hammer ).
Cassius The renewed success and the ridiculous benefits that flow from it lead to an existential crisis, opposing its black "keep-it-real" identity to its new whitewashed candle. And Stanfield, with his stunned delivery and tongue-in-cheek, invites you to the absurdity of his impossible-to-win dilemma. If all this sounds … odd then I did my job. Yet he pales next to the Wiggy, WTF fantasy diversions Riley has lifted his joyful-joker Marxist sleeve. Sorry to bother you is a timely social satire, with a scalpel, with great laughs and even bigger ideas – probably some more ideas than he can juggle. But when you take as many bold risks as Riley, you deserve the benefit of the doubt. A-
