A Texas woman is allowing her breast cancer operation to be broadcast live on Facebook in hopes of inspiring more women to get screened for this often fatal disease.
Last December, during a visit to the doctor, Sonia Johnson discovered that she had a breast tumor. At that time, she was determined to use her faith and positivity to defeat the disease, she told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth.
"I will be able to say" I had cancer, "said Johnson." Right now, I say I have cancer. Tomorrow I will say "I had cancer"
She said she has received dozens of messages of support from other breast cancer survivors and hopes that her experience will help others facing the diagnosis.
"This patient is brave, she is amazing," Allison DiPasquale, a breast cancer surgeon, told the radio station. "She puts her body out so people can say," Wow, I'm going to have a mammogram and make sure I do not have cancer. "
Johnson's lumpectomy surgery will be broadcast live on Facebook by the Methodist Charlton Medical Center. Surgeons and oncologists will be waiting during the live stream to answer questions.
