Texans at Jaguars: John McClain's screening report

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A look at the games played on Sunday in the Texans-Jaguars game at TIAA Bank Field.

When jaguars are running

Leonard Fournette has lost so much time because of serious hamstring injuries. The Jaguars failed to get the production and regularity of the game running expected. Losing left tackle Cam Robinson also hurt. The Jaguars are 18th in the race (103.3 yards), including 11th (4.43) on average per race. Backup T.J. Yeldon, their top scorer with 299 yards, is also injured. Quarterback Blake Bortles is a good runner who will have to reinforce the ground game. He is the second-leading scorer with 188 yards in 26 races. The Texans played solidly at a superb defense at the race. They are 10th in the standings (95.8), including the third on average per race (3.84). The top seven played hard but they were disciplined in the trials, usually keeping the back of the net for linebackers Benardrick McKinney and Zach Cunningham. Kareem Jackson and Tyrann Mathieu have been excellent at reading and stopping the course. EDGE: Texans

When Jaguars pass

After losing the first six games against the Texans, Blake Bortles helped the Jaguars win two victories last season. He was outstanding in the 45-7 loss to Jacksonville, where he collected 329 yards and three touchdowns without interception. After the match, linebacker Jadeveon Clowney called Bortles "foolish" while the quarterback ransacked the Texans' defense. Texans must be discerning and disciplined in the race and beware of Bortles' departure. At 6-5, 236, he's big as a tight and runs like one. Bortles had too much time to get into the December debacle and chose high school apart. Clowney, J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus – who have not yet registered a bag – must put pressure on Bortles and force him to make bad decisions with the ball. He has just won mediocre performances back to back and hopes to regain his reputation in front of local fans. The Texans are 14th against the pass (245.8 yards). The Jaguars are 15th in the passage (267.7). Bortles' favorite targets are Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole, both of whom have exceptional speed. EDGE: Texans

When Texans run

The offensive did not bring Onta Foreman back, so Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue will have to share the load again. Both had trouble locating the engine room steadily. Line workers and tight ends need to improve as point blockers. The Texans are 15th in the race (109.2 yards), of which 26 average per race (3.88). Jacksonville's second-ranked defense (306.5) is 22nd against the race (118.7), including 16th on average per race (4.28). Jaguars are built to attack a quarter with lighter, faster and faster linebackers, but they can be mastered. The Texans could perhaps take advantage of this speed on the ground by organizing a few draws to keep them in imbalance. What Texans have to do, is to run less on the first try and use short passes like races. Advocates expect them to run first because they know that's what Bill O'Brien likes to do. EDGE: Jaguars

When Texans pass

It could become ugly. Deshaun Watson was sacked seven times and was knocked down 12 times in the last win over Buffalo. It was the worst offensive performance of the season. Watson played injured and absorbed a lot of punishment. Bill O 'Brien said that they would work to get rid of the balloon faster in order to prevent it from getting hit. Expect more drops and deployments in three stages to get you away from the Jacksonville Pass defenders. In their sweep of the Texans last season, the Jaguars recorded 14 sacks, including six by Calais Campbell. Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue and Dante Fowler exert enormous pressure from outside. Linebackers Myles Jackson and Telvin Smith have exceptional speed and can also put pressure on the passer. Texans could be absent from right guard Zach Fulton, injured. If he can not play, Greg Mancz will replace him. EDGE: Jaguars
