No. 7 LSU thought that he had beaten No. 22 Texas A & M three times in the last minute of regulation.
But the game was extended and became the craziest game of the year and a heartbreaking defeat for Ed Orgeron's team. A & M finally won 74-72 in seven overtime. Yes, seven more hours.
This ended up being the fifth game to go to 7OT in the history of FBS, setting a record. He also scored the most marked match in the history of the SEC.
But before these records materialized, there was a lot of controversy.
The Tigers had a 31-24 lead when A & M took possession of the ball with a time of 1:23. A & M was heading for midfield, but LSU appeared to have finished the match when quarterback A & M Kellen Mond was intercepted by Grant Delpit of LSU.
The interception triggered a celebration on the sideline of the LSU – including a Gatorade bath for Orgeron – but the play was recalled because Mond's knee touched the ground while recovering a bad slam well before throwing the pass.
A few pieces later, A & M was facing the fourth and eighteenth. This is where the controversy really began.
Mond hit Quartney Davis for what was a first win. With the time that has passed quickly, the referee team quickly moved to spot the ball and move the chains. But it was pretty clear on television that Davis had at least half a meter (if not more) to win.
The yellow line is not official, but the screenshot below shows (at the top) the location of the first marker. Davis has clearly landed on the line to win.
And that's where the referee originally indicated. It's short.
But the game was not completely destroyed and Mond managed to sprint to the straight and put it back up, stopping the clock 10 seconds from the end.
In the next play, Mond hit Kendrick Rogers for 22-yard gain at LSU 19. A & M was running out of time and had to come back on the line. The countdown has been set to zero, but after a check, one second has been applied.
That was all Mond needed to force overtime. He hit Davis for 19 yards at the end of time to keep the game alive.
A & M would not let all those extra opportunities get lost. But it took a very, very long time.
