DALLAS – A dispute over a baby's birthday party in South Texas escalated into a shooting causing four deaths and a fifth wounded, authorities said Sunday. The shootout occurred during the first birthday party of a child Saturday afternoon in Taft, 20 km north of Corpus Christi, the Texas Public Security Department announced. Sgt. Nathan Brandley said the people involved were distant relatives. The authorities did not say what the men were arguing about.

A 20-year-old man was in custody Sunday, Brandley said. The man's 37-year-old father was also a suspect, but he had not been arrested yet, Brandley said.

"Many people have witnessed this," Brandley said. "We are still interviewing eyewitnesses and everyone present at the party, trying to piece together all the pieces of the puzzle."

He identified those killed as Juan Espinoza Sr, 62 years old; Juan Sandoval III, 20 years old; Jeremy Sandoval, 22 years old; and Nicky Sandoval, 25 years old. He said that the three younger men are grandsons of Juan Espinoza Sr.

The injured Juan Espinoza Jr., 43, was flown to a hospital in Corpus Christi. Brandley said that he should survive.

Officials hope to publish more information on this case later on Sunday night, according to reports from CBS Dallas / Fort Worth.

"Once we have processed certain mandates for the people we are looking for, we will be able to release certain information to the public," Brandley said.
