AUSTIN – Police lifted an eviction order to the Capitol on Tuesday after determining that a suspicious package handed over to a Democratic legislator constituted "no viable threat" to public safety.
Poncho Nevarez, a Democrat who represents parts of Texas along the US-Mexico border, said The Dallas Morning News he learned on Tuesday morning that his office was evacuated after receiving a suspicious package. Several other offices in the immediate vicinity have been emptied and the police stationed in the corridor.
The limited evacuation order was lifted a few hours later, after a demining team from the Texas Department of Public Security determined that the package was not a threat.
"(DPS) responded to a suspicious package and a letter that was handed out today at the office of a state representative to the Texas Capitol," said spokesman Tom Vinger in a statement. "The DPS officers, including the DPS Bomb Squad, reacted and a limited area of the Capitol extension was evacuated as a precaution.The DPS cleaned up the area and no viable threat arose. The area was reopened to the public. "
