The Rangers started getting rid of marketable assets on Thursday just before the return of the All-Star game by sending long-throw reliever Jesse Chavez to the Chicago Cubs. The Rangers will receive the Tyler Thomas Class A southpaw.
Thomas, age 22, is 3-5 with a 2.88 ERA at the bottom of the Midwest League South Division. He will go to class A Hickory. Thomas was a seventh round pick in 2017 from the state of Fresno.
Thomas saw his interim stock perhaps slide in 2017 with some late-season struggles. He entered the Cubs' system as a slightly built southpaw (6-1, 175 lbs.) With a fast ball slightly below average, but with a very refined changeup. He only ran 27 innings in 94.1 with a fastball in the range of 87-88 miles at the hour, a ball breaking and a gear change.
Chavez, a month before his 35th birthday, was a good antidote for effective Rangers. He has 56 innings in 30 games and a 3.51 ERA.
Thomas is the third pitcher of minor leagues that the Rangers have acquired since the beginning of the season through an exchange. They added Emmanuel Clase to a big hit in a deal for receiver Brett Nicholas and right-handed Jason Bahr in an agreement with San Francisco two weeks ago.
