BANGKOK (AP) – Thai authorities have decided to extend indefinitely the closure of a beautiful bay made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio's film, "The Beach," until it's closed. is recovering damage to the environment by years.
They announced in March that tourists would be excluded from Maya Bay from June 1 to September 30.
An official announcement published Monday in the Royal Gazette announced that the bay, which is part of a national park, will be closed "from 1 October 2018, until the marine natural resources regain their state normal".
According to this announcement, an evaluation of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife Conservation and Plants revealed that after being closed to tourists for four months, Maya Bay still had not restored.
Maya Bay, part of Hat Noppharat National Park Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi, has remained open year-round to meet tourist demand since a Hollywood crew went there in 1999 to film the black narrative of the backpacker featuring DiCaprio. Many Thai marine national parks are closed every year for four months.
Maya Bay Beach had an average of 200 boats and 4,000 visitors a day. Recent studies by a team led by marine biologists revealed that much of the coral reefs in the area had disappeared and marine life had virtually disappeared.
