An actor from New Mexico confessed to having built his career on a shocking lie. Todd LaTourrette, who recently played a small role in You better call Saul, said he had told casting directors that he was a veteran who had lost his arm in Afghanistan. "I cut my hand with a jigsaw," LaTourrette told the local news station. The actor, who claimed to have been diagnosed bipolar, said the self-inflicted wound had occurred 17 years ago, while "the state of mind was an episode psychotic". During this period, he was not taking his prescribed medication, planned several days before cutting his arm and cauterizing the wound. He later created a prosthesis whose appearance was "normal". Eventually, he started telling the story of war injuries to get a temporary job.
"I was different and so they liked that," LaTourrette said about the film industry. "They trusted me to be exactly what I said: I was a veteran. I was hired because I lied. I was dishonorable.
LaTourrette worked as a performer on stage and played minor roles in a handful of television shows and movies, including Longmire and Men watching goats. In 2016, he published consumed, a memoir on his fight against mental illness. According to his description "About the Author" on Amazon, LaTourrette's book explains in detail how "my success as a film and television actor has been darkened by my experience in the US military."
In the television interview, LaTourrette, moved, said that he "knowingly" kills his acting career by revealing the truth. But he hopes his story can educate other people with mental illness about the dangers of not being cared for.
