CHICAGO – A police officer resigned during an investigation into his response to a woman who claimed to have been harassed in a Chicago forest reserve for wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag. The images of the incident, captured on Facebook Live last month, became viral and even drew the attention of the Puerto Rican governor.
Cook County Forest Reserves announced on Twitter that Constable Patrick Connor resigned Wednesday night. The records show that he was with the force since 2006.
In a now viral video of June 14, a furious approaching Mia Irizarry while she was waiting for her family to an area Picnic in the Cook County Forest Reserves to celebrate its 24th anniversary. Among other things in the 36-minute video, he tells Irizarry not to wear a Puerto Rican t-shirt if she is an American citizen – although the territory is part of the United States
"You should not bring that to the United States of America, "he said. "Are you a citizen?"
"Yes, I am," replied Irizarry.
"Then you should not wear that, you should wear the flag of the United States of America," he says.
On video, Connor tells Irizarry that he did not think she was in danger. More officers finally arrived and arrested the man.
Connor was initially placed on the desk while the investigation began. The forest conservation district indicates that the authorities continue to investigate the incident.
