Evans tweeted Thursday about his last day on the "Avengers 4" set.

"Officially wrapped in Avengers 4. It was at least a moving day," said the star on Twitter. "Playing this role over the past 8 years has been an honor to all those who are in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful."

In March, Evans hinted that he was ready to hang on his shield and bid farewell to the Marvel franchise during an interview with The New York Times.

"You want to get off the train before they push you," Evans told The Times.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" was released in 2011 and the film "Avengers", due to appear next year, would be the last one for which Evans is under contract.

Evans was loved as Captain America and his alter ego, Steve Rogers.

After his tweet on Thursday, #ThankYouChrisEvans began to be trendy as fans showed their gratitude for one of their favorite superheroes.

Evans has even received love from celebrities.

"What race did you have my brother," Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson tweeted. "Congratulations for giving life to such an iconic character, keep it up."
