The skull-shaped asteroid that made the headlines in 2015 came back, as expected, for another overflight. In December 2017, scientists informed the public that the 2015 TB145 asteroid would make another pass relatively close to Earth in 2018, although it will not happen in time for Halloween. Instead, the giant space skull will zoom in November.
This asteroid, officially named 2015 TB145, but unofficially known as the asteroid of the skull, was discovered by researchers in mid-October 2015. According to initial estimates, space rock would have a length between 2050 and 2296 feet. that of the moon.
A captured image of the asteroid (above) earned him the nickname of Skull. It is easy to see the resemblance; The grainy image seems to show a human skull devoid of jaw bones, the rock comprising "orbits", a crest of the nose and cheekbones. Of course, all this is fun – there is certainly no giant human skull that circles the space.
Unfortunately, the asteroid will be farther this year at about 105 times the average distance from the moon. However, researchers have had more than two years to prepare for the event. So we hope that interesting new images of the "skull" will be released before the end of 2018. The next time this asteroid will make headlines will be in decades – it will not happen near Halloween until 2088.
