LOS ANGELES – CBS announced its pilot engagement in a humorous series co-created by the author of "Crazy Rich Asians", Kevin Kwan, learned Variety.
The multi-camera comedy entitled "The Emperor of Malibu". He follows two very different families – one from Shanghai with new money and one from the US East Coast with old money – who must learn to coexist when their children get married.
Kwan will be the screenwriter and executive producer of the series with David Sangalli. Michelle Nader, Christina Lee and Danielle Stokdyk will also be Executive Producers, along with Warner Bros. Television.
This is the second TV project that Kwan and Sangalli have partnered to create. Variety had previously reported that the duo was creating a drama at Amazon, within the most influential and powerful family of Hong Kong and the commercial empire that they control.
Kwan's first successful novel, "Crazy Rich Asians", has recently been adapted to become a feature film of the same name, which has grossed more than $ 232 million worldwide. His later novels "China Rich Girlfriend", published in 2015, and "Rich People Problems" are national and international bestsellers. "Rich People Problems" debuted on the New York Times bestseller list when it was released in 2017.
It is also the second Asia-focused comedy to be developed this year. ABC is developing a comedy to a camera of the writer "Rick and Morty", Jessica Gao, about a first-generation Sino-American woman who becomes the sole heiress of her wealthy grandmother's estate.
Kwan and Sangalli are taken over by ICM Partners and Lichter Grossman.
