The Bengals had to dismiss Teryl Austin after his defense had marked the history of the NFL

The offensive of the Saints playing the defense of the Bengals proved more flammable than a rag soaked in gasoline.

The Bengals lost, fell to 5-4 and this morning returned defense coordinator Teryl Austin. In his place, Marvin Lewis will assume the responsibilities of defensive coordinator in addition to continuing as head coach.

The Bengals' offense struggled without receiver A.J. Green, but the defense continued to appear lifeless and hopeless against perhaps the NFL's best offense. The saints were relentless in their attack and exposed all the deficiencies of the Bengal defense that had not yet been revealed.

So why is Austin getting fired?

Quarterback Drew Brees left the game just after the start of the fourth quarter with 265 passing yards, three touchdowns and three unfinished.

Impacting Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara were 264 yards rushing and three touchdowns total. Ingram just could not be stopped when he had the ball.

And now, 509 total yards of offenses allowed later, the Bengals have made history.

No defense in the history of the NFL has ever allowed three consecutive 500-yard games, until now. The defense of the Bengals in 2018 is the first unit to do so and bears witness to the abominable defense of their defense this year. Austin deserved to be fired for this very reason.

Forcing the other team to hit could have helped to prevent that from happening as well. Instead, Austin's defense allowed players of other choices to continue with scores.

Thus each of the goods of the saints ended on Sunday. Each result gave a score.

Entering this game, the Bengals finished last in yards per game, and yielded 551 yards to the Chiefs in Week 7 and 576 yards to the Buccaneers in Week 8. In Week 6 against the Steelers, the Bengals were 19 meters from the story two weeks earlier.

Over the past week, defense coordinator Teryl Austin has hidden his horrible defenseman behind the Bengals 5-3 record. But after the saints had just taken advantage of the defense, it was impossible for Austin to excuse the poor performance of his unit.

Austin brought more problems than Detroit's solutions with him, and although we should not ignore the simultaneous struggles of last month's offensive, the defense is now *officially* historically bad. Someone will be responsible for repairing it again.

The Bengals never seem to be well off their week off, but a month of preparation would probably have had no impact against the Saints, who are able to crush the team they play. This is the first time they have scored 50 points or more on 500 yards or more since 2015 and the fourth time in franchise history.

Fortunately, the Bengals will no longer play against the Saints until 2022 (except for a Super Bowl meeting), but that will not save Austin.

The Bengals now need a new defensive coordinator. But things can not really get worse.
