Looking upwards in space reminds us that everyone on Earth is stuck on a big rock of space that drifts through an endless black void.

Unfortunately, earthly concerns such as work, dinner and restful sleep tend to keep us face to face.

Fortunately, some people do not just take the time to enjoy the night sky, but are also talented enough to capture its thrilling splendor in fascinating images that remind us of our cosmically fragile existence.

The 10-year-old Insight Astronomy photographer's competition honors this spirit of an epic distillation of "the most beautiful and spectacular images of space and cosmos", according to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, organizer of the contest.

For this edition, judges reviewed more than 4,200 applications from 91 countries before selecting 11 winning images.

The overall winner is shown above. Photographer Brad Goldpoint has won nearly $ 13,000. This long exhibition titled "Transport the Soul" shows the galaxy of the Milky Way (right), the Moon (center) and the astrophotographer maneuvering a tripod (left) perched at the edge of a desert canyon of Moab, in Utah.

Here are the other 10 award-winning images announced this week, as well as a handful of outstanding finalists.
