And as Americans have more choices about where they live and work, Glassdoor has sorted out the options and ranked Pittsburgh as one of the best metropolitan cities for jobs in 2018. Next come St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Hartford , Conn., According to the website of job offers.

Rankings are based on the number of hiring opportunities relative to the population, the affordability of the region and job satisfaction. Glassdoor ranked the 25 best regions among the 50 largest metropolitan areas.

The Glassdoor survey provides a more comprehensive view of the major labor markets than the raw numbers reported by Labor. By this last measure, Minneapolis-St. Paul's region had the lowest unemployment rate in August (2.5%), followed by San Jose; San Francisco; Austin, Texas; and Nashville. And Orlando has landed the fastest job growth.

"Not only do job seekers want to be able to find a good job, but they also want to be able to pay the cost of living and be satisfied" with their work, says Amanda Stansell, an economic research analyst at Glassdoor.
